Festival Saturday concludes with one of the best films of the last year – director Spike Lee’s dark comedy crime drama, BlacKkKlansman. Tickets: £6 in advance from Chorleywood Bookshop, online or on the door if still available.
This incredible true story is set in the early 1970s, a time of great social upheaval as the struggle for civil rights rages on in America. Ron Stallworth becomes the first African-American detective on the Colorado Springs Police Department, but his arrival is greeted with scepticism and open hostility by the department’s rank and file. Undaunted, Stallworth resolves to make a name for himself and a difference in his community. He bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan.
The young detective soon recruits a more seasoned colleague into the undercover investigation of a lifetime. Together, they team up to take down the extremist hate group as the organisation aims to sanitise its violent rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream.
Starring John David Washington, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier and Topher Grace. Lee’s film captures the absurd aspects of this story, while still drawing parallels that make the movie feel urgent and dishearteningly relevant in Trump’s America.
“The vibe is authentic, the period detail tasty, yet BlacKkKlansman burns with contemporary anger…”
Emma Simmonds, Radio Times
“It works brilliantly as a dark comedy; it works as a muscular, historical drama that educates as much as it entertains; it works as a thrilling cop flick. It works, basically.”
Chris Wasser, The Herald
“It’s funny and well acted and the use of music is excellent.”
Matthew Bond, Mail On Sunday
BlacKkKlansman (Cert.15 : 135 mins) is being screened at the War Memorial Hall, Common Road on Saturday 9th March. Doors open at 7.30p.m., programme begins at 8.00p.m.
Please note: The film contains racist violence and language; and very strong language.
