Our screening on Friday 21st April was A United Kingdom, directed by Amma Asante and starring David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike and Jack Davenport.
When Seretse Khama, the future King of Botswana, was studying in Britain in 1947 he met London office worker Ruth Williams. Their proposed marriage was considered shocking and was challenged by their families and the British and South African governments.
South Africa had recently introduced the apartheid policy and found a bi-racial couple ruling a neighbouring country intolerable. They threatened the British: either thwart the couple or be denied access to South African uranium and gold and face the risk of South Africa invading Botswana.
