April’s film – A United Kingdom – is an inspiring romantic drama.

In 1947, whilst Seretse Khama, the future King of Bechuanaland was a law student studying in Britain, he met and fell in love with Ruth Williams, a London office worker. They were a perfect match, yet their proposed marriage was considered shocking and scandalous.  It was challenged not only by their families, but by the British and South African governments too.

Having recently introduced the policy of apartheid, the South African government found the notion of a bi-racial couple ruling a neighbouring country intolerable. They threatened the British: either thwart the couple or be denied access to South African uranium and gold and face the risk of South Africa invading Bechuanaland (modern Botswana).

It is a remarkable tale not only because it’s a true story, but one where a romance influenced the outcome of British and African history.

Directed by British film-maker, Amma Asante, the film stars David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike and Jack Davenport.
