judy (cert. 12, 118 mins, dir. rupert goold)

Starring: Renée Zellweger, Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock

The Festival’s opening film is set in London in 1968 and features an award-winning performance from Renée Zellweger. Judy captures the waning days of Judy Garland with clear-eyed compassion and contains some of her best-loved songs. The film celebrates the voice, the capacity for love and the sheer pizzaz of “the world’s greatest entertainer”.

With a jaw-dropping performance from Renée Zellweger at its pulsing, neurotic heart, the film is funny, warm and satisfyingly self-aware.” (Lisa Mullen, Sight and Sound)
