TOP TIPS

RESEARCH THE TYPE OF FILM YOU WANT TO MAKE

What made these films successful/what do you like about them/what inspiration can you take from them?

EXPERIMENTAL: Non-conventional ways of filming – usually relating to the arts e.g. performance, dance, art. Could be cross-genre and mixture of filming techniques.

ANIMATION: Stop-motion animation: 2D (e.g. paper cut-outs/drawing etc) or 3D (e.g. tactile objects/puppets or people etc). Or computer generated animation. This can be experimental or fiction.

FICTION: Tells a fictional story with actors (drama, comedy, horror etc).

DOCUMENTARY: Non-fictional; intended to document some element of reality (e.g. life events, family/friends, hobbies, nature, things that affect you etc.) You could even make a pseudo-documentary which takes the style of a documentary but is fictional.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY STORY? A story has a beginning, middle and end following a particular character or subject. At the beginning of your story you should establish the setting (which can be real or imaginary) and set up your characters or subjects (their wants/needs/purpose which drives the story). In the middle of the story usually something happens to the characters or subjects which is a turning point. This then leads us to the end where we should see whether or not the characters or subjects are successful or it could be left unknown.

PLANNING YOUR FILM

  • Generating ideas – think about your interests/films you like. Think what if…? Create a visual image page/mind map to help you discover a theme/style.
  • Draft out a script idea.
  • Use storyboards to plan how your film will fit together. STORYBOARD TEMPLATE
  • What will you film it on? Smart phone, video camera, stills camera, go pro, tablet etc… you decide!
  • Decide on location or set. If an animation how will you create your environment?
  • Who/what will be in your film? Actors, puppets, objects, animals, the environment, you etc.
  • If you are in a team who takes on what role?
  • Alternatively you may want go and explore with a camera, filming footage to edit later.
